You know the drawer/box/bin. The one full of jumbled mystery cords, duplicate chargers and cables for devices you haven’t owned in years.

I finally tackled organizing all those cables and accessories and it makes such a difference. Now everything is sorted, properly stored and clearly labeled. As with most things, having the right tools and starting by sorting and tossing, makes the task much easier.

#1 Sort Before You Store:

I know we all fear tossing that one cable that you might eventually need for something someday! If you haven't used it so far, can't identify it or don't know what device it goes to--bye-bye! And, there is absolutely no reason to organize twelve identical cords you will never use. Keep only a few of the same type as backups.

Sort Ruthlessly! Organizers do not solve clutter if all you have done is neatly package things you do not need.

Toss everything on the floor or a table and group like with like:

  • USB-C

  • Lightning

  • HDMI

  • charging blocks

  • headphones

  • specialty cords

  • “I have no idea what this goes to”

  • power packs

  • etc.

Step 2: Give Each Cable Type Its Own Pouch:

Clear Zipper Pouches – 16 Pack

These are my preference because they are soft and flexible.

They have a little give, so if one pouch has an extra charging block or a slightly bulky cable, it still works. The clear sides also make it easy to see what is inside without opening everything.

One pouch for USB-C. One for Apple cables. One for HDMI. You get the idea.

Clear Hard-Shell Zipper Cases – 4 Pack

If you prefer a more structured look, these are the other option.

The hard cases do not have as much flexibility, but they do line up beautifully in a drawer or storage bin and give everything a very neat, uniform look.

This one really comes down to personal preference.

Step 3: Label Everything:

DYMO LetraTag 100H Handheld Label Maker

Once everything has a home, label it.

This is what turns a pile of cords into a system you can actually maintain.

“USB-C” is much more useful six months from now than opening five different bags trying to remember what is inside.

I also find labeling on 2 sides helps: on top and on one side and all placed facing the same direction in the same spot.

Compatible DYMO LetraTag White Label Tape – 3 Pack

Keep extra tape on hand so you don't run out and now your progress is hampered until you get more. You want to start and finish the project in one session.

Step 4: Put the Pouches Neatly Away:

CLEARSPACE Plastic Storage Bins with Lids

I like clear bins when the cables are going into a closet, cabinet or utility space because you can immediately see what is inside. Line up the pouches with the top labels facing you and when you put the bin away make sure those top labels are still facing you.

Fabric Storage Bins – 6 Pack

If the bins will be somewhere visible, fabric bins are nicer option. They hide the visual clutter while still keeping everything together.

Use whichever fits your space.

The end result of this project will make you happy!
