Blemishes & Blackheads at Our Age?! Here’s What I Use

Just when you think breakouts are behind you, an annoying blemish appears out of nowhere. And blackheads? Apparently, they did not get the memo that we are grown women now.

The good news is that you do not need an entire shelf of acne products. For me, the simplest approach works best: use a patch for the occasional blemish, choose one gentle exfoliant for clogged pores and—most importantly—leave your skin alone.

For the Occasional Blemish: Cover It and Leave It Alone

My best advice? Do not pick.

Picking usually turns one small blemish into a much bigger, longer-lasting problem. Instead, I cover it with a hydrocolloid patch and let the patch do its thing.

At Night

Mighty Patch Original Nighttime Acne Pimple Patches

These are my go-to when a blemish appears before bed. I apply one to clean, completely dry skin and leave it alone overnight.

No squeezing. No touching. No staring at it in the magnifying mirror.

During the Day

These are thinner and less noticeable, so they work well when I want to protect a blemish during the day without making it the main event.

The biggest benefit may simply be that the patch keeps my hands off it.

For Blackheads and Clogged Pores: Add an Exfoliant

For blackheads, I like to incorporate a leave-on exfoliant after cleansing. The goal is not to scrub harder. It is to use one effective product consistently and give it time to work.

My two favorites are:

The Simple Liquid Option

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

This is the classic, no-fuss option. I apply a small amount after cleansing, focusing on the areas where I tend to get blackheads or clogged pores.

A little goes a long way. You do not need to soak your face in it.

The Easy Toner-Pad Option

Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0

These pre-soaked pads are convenient when I want something quick and easy. I gently swipe one over the areas that need it rather than scrubbing aggressively.

You do not need both exfoliants. Choose the format you are most likely to use consistently and move on.

A Quick Note if You Use Tretinoin

Because exfoliating products and prescription tretinoin can both irritate the skin, I do not pile everything onto my face at once.

I prefer to introduce an exfoliant slowly and use it on a different night from tretinoin, especially at first. If my skin starts to feel dry, tight or irritated, I scale back.

More products do not mean faster results.

Blemish Plan—Done

For an occasional blemish: patch it and stop touching it.

For blackheads: choose one exfoliant, use it consistently and be patient.

That’s it. No complicated acne routine. No harsh scrubs. No cluttered counter. Just a few targeted products that solve a specific problem and earn their place.
