My Simple AM Skin Care Routine: The Essentials That Actually Work

I love skin care, but I don’t want my bathroom counter covered with endless bottles—or a time-consuming morning routine.

At this stage of life, I’m much more interested in using a few carefully chosen products that serve a real purpose. This is the simple four-step morning skin care routine I actually use. It includes a practical mix of splurges and saves, so you can spend where it matters and keep the rest refreshingly simple.

Step 1: Cleanse Gently

In the morning, the goal isn’t to scrub your skin squeaky clean. I simply want to refresh it without leaving it feeling tight or dry.

My two reliable choices are:

Save: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser
A straightforward, gentle cleanser that gets the job done without unnecessary extras.

Another favorite: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser
This one feels creamy and comfortable and is especially lovely when my skin feels dry.

You don’t need both. Choose one and move on.

Step 2: Add Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the treatment step in my morning routine. I use it after cleansing and before my prescription cream and sunscreen.

Here are three options at different price points:

My splurge: Obagi Professional-C Vitamin C Serum

Another strong option: Paula’s Choice 25% Vitamin C Serum with Glutathione and Antioxidants

Luxury option: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

You only need one. The best choice is the one that works for your skin, fits your budget and is comfortable enough for you to use consistently. I tend to alternate among the luxury, splurge and lower-priced options depending on what I’m using—and what I feel like spending—at the time.

Step 3: Use My Dermatologist-Prescribed Cream

My third step is an estrogen-based facial cream prescribed specifically for me by my dermatologist. This is something you can discuss with your own dermatologist to find out whether it may be appropriate for you.

Because it is a prescription treatment—not a general over-the-counter recommendation—I don’t have a product link for it. Midlife skin changes are worth discussing with a qualified medical professional who can consider your personal health history and individual needs.

Never use someone else’s prescription or purchase a compounded hormone cream without guidance from your own medical provider.

Step 4: Finish With Sunscreen

This is the nonnegotiable final step. If you do one thing—and one thing only—make it sunscreen.

I use it every day, whether it is sunny or cloudy and whether I expect to be outside or spending time indoors near windows.

I’m much more likely to apply sunscreen every morning when it feels lightweight, blends smoothly and doesn’t leave a noticeable white cast. These are the formulas I reach for:

EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40 Face Sunscreen
A smooth everyday option that works beautifully when my skin needs a little extra moisture.

EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Face Sunscreen
A lightweight tinted option with zinc oxide that gives the skin a more finished look.

Organic Korean Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++
A light Korean sunscreen option for mornings when I want something that feels especially easy to wear.

Effective AM Routine—Done

That’s it: cleanse, vitamin C, prescribed treatment and sunscreen.

Four purposeful steps. No overflowing product drawer. No complicated layering chart. Just the essentials that actually work for me and make sense in a real-life morning routine.
