A shared hand towel in a guest bathroom seems perfectly normal—until you have a house full of people using it.

Usually guest bath hand towels get used by only a few people, but when you are hosting a group, that hand towel gets a lot of use!

We've all experienced it -- you are at a gathering, you use the bathroom and when you go to dry your hands you cringe at seeing the one hanging hand towel has multiple damp spots and you try to find the one dry square inch to use.

And this time of year, when we’re hosting family, friends, holiday dinners and gatherings, the guest bathroom will be getting a lot more traffic than usual.

A cleaner solution is surprisingly simple:

Individual washcloths — one fresh towel per guest.

Roll or fold them neatly, stack them on a decorative tray by the sink, and place a small basket nearby for used towels.

Each guest gets a clean towel. Used ones go into the basket. Then you wash and reuse them.

Simple, sanitary and so much nicer when you have more than just one or two people visiting.

#1 Start With Simple White Washcloths:

Amazon Basics Fast-Drying Cotton Washcloths – 24 Pack

I like white because it looks clean, works with almost any bathroom and is easy to wash together.

At 12" × 12", these are a good size for drying hands without taking up too much counter space. And a 24-pack means you can put out plenty when you’re expecting a crowd without worrying about running out.

#2 Add a Tray for the Clean Towels:

You may already have exactly what you need at home.

A decorative serving tray, shallow basket or even a pretty platter (around 12" × 16") can work perfectly. There is no need to buy something new just to create the setup.

If you do need one, these are a few options I like:

Kate and Laurel Lissi Decorative Rectangle Tray – 16" × 12"

A polished option if you want something more decorative on the counter.

Large Scalloped Rectangle Tray with Handles – 16" × 12"

A woven option that adds some texture and feels a little more relaxed.

#3 Give Used Towels an Obvious Place to Go:

Put a small basket on the floor (or somewhere nearby) and drop one wash cloth in it so guests immediately understand where to put their used towel.

Again, look around your house first. A small woven basket, decorative bin or even a pretty wastebasket you already own may work perfectly.

If not:

TIDITA Water Hyacinth Wicker Basket

A simple natural woven option.

CosmoLiving Metal Floral Small Waste Bin – Gold

A more decorative choice if you want something that coordinates with gold bathroom hardware.

Thought your gathering do a quick re-stock of towels as needed. A good tip is to pre-roll or stack your towels so you can simply grab as many as you need and easily re-stock the tray.

This small change will give your guests a more elevated, almost hotel or spa touch, in your guest bathroom.

And when everyone leaves?

Collect the used washcloths, throw them in the laundry and restack them for next time.

No disposable paper hand towels. No shared damp towel. No unnecessary waste.

Just one clean towel per guest, washed and reused.
